Tiptoe 2

During college, I was a student athlete on the crew team. At 5’9 I was on the short end of the spectrum. Many of my teammates were 5’10 – 6’+.  Finding an appropriately tall person to date was as easy as finding another student athlete.  The tall dating pool was built in.

However, after school, in my 20s I moved to a big city.  I had a few above average height friends (gals 6′ tall) and I noticed that tall mates seemed less available unless you were part of an athletic club (e.g. volleyball club, triathlete circuit) or just got lucky and worked with a tall person or tall people). It was challenging to find tall guys to date and it seemed like the most important criteria (aside from having a job and not being an axe murderer!!) was height. They needed to find someone that was taller than them.

With each generation getting taller finding a tall mate may become more of a challenge. www.tall.singles Founder, Richard Vickery, tells us why and how his tall dating site works. TallSingle.com started in the UK and is now in the US and it boasts 80 marriages. If height is a “must-have” quality for you then read on and find out how www.tall.singles weeds out the shorter mates. Let vertically enhanced love find you.

Q

Why a tall specific dating site?

When I got to that age where you start going to nightclubs and bars trying to find girlfriends I would always struggle to meet someone. Not becuase I was ugly (well I hope that wasn’t the reason!) but because I was tall. You see I had a growth spurt in my teenage years and in my late teens I was head and shoulders above everyone my age. So when I walked into a bar I was very often the tallest person of my age in there and the majority of the women my age were much shorter. This continued all the way throught my early 20’s. It made me think that I meeded to find a way to solve this problem. So one evening I searched for free domain names and realised tallsingles.co.uk was free, I bought it immediately and started a tall persons dating site.

Q

Do tall people have more difficulty finding a mate?

A

Well from my experience and the feedback I have had from other people, the answer would be yes! Women seems to want to date men who are taller than them, much of this is due to social pressure (it’s not often you see couples where the man is shorter) and some of it is to do with wanting to feel protected by a taller man. For tall men, it’s again the social pressure but also the fact that a really big height difference can feel awkward. Tall people get enough people stare at them when they walk along on their own, that is multiplied 10 times when they walk hand in hand with a partner who is much shorter.

TallSinglesMainPhoto

Q

Are tall people considered more attractive which is why they can have their own site?

A

No I don’t think so. The idea of the site is to allow tall people to meet other tall people, in order to avoid the “difficult” situations that arise when tall people date much shorter people.

Q

How does your dating site work? Do you set up a profile, wink, go on dates, etc?

A

You can join our site for free initially, so you can see if it is of interest. You set up a profile, which includes a photo, some multiple choice questions which you answer about yourself and a small bio. Once that is done, you can then search for people you might want to date and send them a ‘wink’ (which is an easy way to say you like the look of them) or a message. If you want to arrange a date, you have to upgrade to paid membership.

Q

What is the cost to join your service?

A

Our business model is a subscription service. The costs are as follows, 6 month’s membership £79.95, 3 month’s membership £49.95 and 1 month membership – £24.95. We are up to 72% cheaper than one of the most popular dating sites match.com and of course we only have tall members on our site which is just what tall people want. I am happy to give your readers a 50% discount on a 1 month membership, all they need to do is enter code “50TALL” at checkout.

Q

How do you set yourself apart from your peers?

A

Two things set us apart from our peers. Firstly we are one of the only tall dating sites that restricts members by height, women have to be 5’5’’ and over, men 6’0’’ and over. Secndly we are building a tall community, to discuss tall issues, have a laught about all those things tall people are asked etc.

Q

Why did you start this business? Was it to find a relationship? Can you share other success stories?

A

I started the business in 2012: http://www.tallsingle.com/. As I mentioned above it was to solve a problem that I had encountered when I was younger. I would definitely use it to find a relationship, but when I created the site I was already in a relationship.

We have had over 80 marriages so I can happily share some success stories.  To be continued in a future post.

Press: Europe’s Tallest Tourist Attraction Mesmerizes

January 23rd, 2014

glass cube 1

Adventure helps to expand our minds and teaches us knowledge that books cannot explain. Always seeking the next greatest adventure, I came upon an attraction in the French alps that suspends a glass cube over the zenith of 3,842 meter high Aiguille du Midi mountain. It certainly tests your nerve. If you fear falling, this may not be the best place for you to go, but if you are courageous enough to stomach an awe-inspiring vision, you must make a trip to the “Pans dans le vide” or Step into the Void.

glass cube 2

The view, 1000 meters down, includes the entire French Alps in addition to Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest mountain. The glass cube structure is made up of 5 transparent sides. Each side is fabricated out of 3 layers of tempered glass fixed to metal for added support.  Just opened to the public after 3 years of construction, one can take a cable car ride up to the lookout for incomparable vistas and refreshments. The cost:

Adults (16+ and older)                                $75.00 USD
Youth (4 -16 years)                                       $64.10 USD
Under 4 years                                               $37.67 USD
Family Packages (2 adults/2 kids)             $226.00 USD

The attraction is a very popular destination already. If you are in  the Chamonix area in France, it is worth a trip to Aiguillle du Midi mountaintop.

Press: Emirates Airline has the world’s longest superjumbo flight

January 16th, 2014

Hi Everyone,

I love adventures to new and interesting places and Dubai has always been on my bucket list of must see destinations. I recently read that Emirates Airlines now has the world’s longest flight at 16 hours straight from Dubai to Los Angeles, crossing 2 continents and 1 ocean. Emirates Airline is well known for its luxury and world class service which is a must have if you are going to be distracted for 16 hours long. For my husband, the Long & Tall guy, he needs legroom and Emirates seats extend to 79 inches or 6 feet 5 inches long. This is incredible for an airline. Interestingly enough Emirates has routes all over the world but they all go to Dubai so they definitely control the experience which is arguably the best on earth. If you are interested to learn more about this airline and what they are doing to make long trips pleasant, click on this web link.

World’s longest superjumbo flight starts 16-hour hauls

December 5, 2013 – The Sydney Morning Herald

By Craig Platt, Travel Editor Digital

Emirates has launched the world’s longest A380 superjumbo flight, from Dubai to Los Angeles, on a route that crosses Russia, the Arctic and northern Canada.

The journey of 16 hours and 20 minutes covers 13,420 kilometres. The first flight touched down on Tuesday in Los Angeles. Previously Emirates had flown the long-range Boeing 777-200LR jet, which it began flying to Los Angeles in 2008. The airline said the introduction of the 489-seat Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger jet, was a response to increased demand for travel between the two cities.

The time difference means  the daily flights will depart Dubai at 8.20am and arrive in Los Angeles at 12.50pm on the same day. Conversely, the return flight departs LA at 4pm and arrives at 7.50pm the next day.

Although Airbus has suffered this year from slow sales of its flagship aircraft, Emirates recently said it viewed the superjumbo as the future of air travel and ordered 50 more of the jets on top of its existing order of 90 – 41 of which have been delivered.

“For us the A380 is the future. And we don’t like anyone talking about it not being around,” president Tim Clark said.

Clark recently indicated that the airline was looking at the possibility of increasing the number of economy class seats by up to 40.

Like Singapore Airlines, Emirates has used the enormous size of the A380 to deliver unique features for passengers, especially at the pointy end. The airline’s first-class cabin has bathrooms with showers – a world first when introduced in 2008.

While Emirates now lays claim to the world’s longest A380 non-stop flight, the title for the longest non-stop flight by distance, is held by Qantas. The longest flight time is Delta Air Lines’ Johannesburg to Atlanta flights which take 17 hours. The Emirates flight is the world’s third longest by distance.

Qantas flights from Sydney to Dallas, with a Boeing 747 jumbo jet, cover a whopping 13,800 kilometres and take a little more than 15 hours.

Qantas took the title last month after Singapore Airlines ended its non-stop flights from Singapore to New York, a 19-hour slog that covered 16,700 kilometres on a four-engine Airbus A340-500. The flights, which were business class only, had struggled to maintain profitability because of rising oil prices.

Press: TEAL Apparel Year End Review

January 9th, 2014

aboutusphoto RESIZED

Happy 2014 Everyone,

2013 was a tremendous year for TEAL Apparel. Much has transpired since the Launch in April and I want to thank everyone for their support and feedback. I launched TEAL to solve the many clothing challenges Long & Tall men and their loved ones encounter each day while providing a premium clothing option designed to fit and feel amazing. So I wanted to share with you what was accomplished last year, what I learned and give some insight as to where TEAL is going in 2014. I am here to serve you so your feedback is encouraged, I’d love to hear from YOU! This is a small family business with Long & Tall dreams. Nothing great ever came easy, yet a step forward is a step in the right direction. All best wishes in 2014 and come back soon.

Warm Regards,

Jenni

What I did:

  • Launch TEAL Apparel with 2 styles of premium chinos (slim and traditional fit)
  • Moved to new location in Massachusetts to be closer to Boston
  • Added inventory for greater selection
  • Revised our story so you understand what TEAL stands
  • Tailored the blog to discuss lifestyle trends in the Long & Tall space
  • Included Free Shipping and Free Returns on all orders, because no one wants a hassle
  • Defined the target market in bold black on the top of our website, because many customers questioned if they were TALL enough
  • Increased our operations and design team to 6 people to improve quality, production and efficiency

 What I learned:

  • There are over 7.7 million men over 6’3 in the US and there is no premium clothing option designed to fit them.
  • 70% of all menswear shopping is done by women and done online
  • Resourcefulness and persistence pay dividends later
  • Never stop learning and improving
  • Trust is earned
  • Make friends
  • Success is made one customer at a time
  • Don’t fear failure, but work your tail off to win
  • Technology can be a helpful agent if you can understand and use it well
  • A great product cannot be made without a great team and the patience to develop it

 What is next?

  • Colors! More colors are on the way for the traditional and slim fits. Finally you can add some variety to your wardrobe
  • Shorts that have added length, because short shorts are embarrassing
  • Video – a better medium to tell our story

Health: Long & Tall Men Are Not Obese, Here’s Proof

January 2nd, 2014

Recently my husband, Ed, went to his pediatrician for his annual checkup and was directed to the Body Mass Index (BMI) chart on the door to explain if his tall size was obese. The chart only went to 6’4, yet Ed is 6’7.  So the doctor made an educated guess that he was not obese given his weight of 218 lbs. and height.

BMI Chart 1 – For Men Under 6’4

BMI chart for men under 6'3

Source: http://www.calculatebmi.co/bmi-calculator-for-men/

We found it disturbing that the chart did not include men taller than 6’3 so I created our own BMI chart specifically for men over 6 feet tall.

BMI Chart 2 – For Men over 6′

BMI chart for men over 6 foot

The BMI charts are extremely informative about the range of people’s health given their height and weight.

Interesting Stats
The BMI index formula is kg/m² or your weight in kilograms divided by your height squared in meters.

Average Weight for men in the US over 20 years old by percentile (according to CDC.gov)

50% 189 lbs

75% 218 lbs

85% 236 lbs

90% 252 lbs

95% 273 lbs

Average Height for men in the US over 20 years old by percentile (according to CDC.gov)

50% 69 in or 5 ft 9 in

75% 71 in or 5 ft 11 in

85% 72 in or 6 ft

90% 73 in or 6 ft 1 in

95% 74 in or 6 ft 2 in

35% of the US population is obese (according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

The results of the research were quite interesting. I found that the taller you are, the less likely you are to become obese as you have more mass to distribute throughout your body. The BMI charts clearly show that men under 6’3 are more likely to be considered obese versus those taller than 6’3. So if you are tall and considered big, you are not necessarily obese. The good news is that we sell clothes for the Long & Tall man who is not obese so rest assured that TEAL will have something great waiting for you when you need it.  Have a happy and healthy New Year everyone!

Warm Regards,

Jenni

Lifestyle: Packing Tips for the Tall Business Traveler

December 19th, 2013

Business traveling is particularly challenging for the tall man. Comfort and ease are not economical options for the tall executive like it is with average sized people. Tall travelers tend to pay more for better seats, more leg room and more bag accommodation. My husband, Ed, travels every week and has found that being light and mobile is very important when traveling to your destination. He never checks luggage; always carries on since it provides flexibility if he needs to change flights quickly or if there are delays and cancellations.

My husband says the big issue for tall travelers is packing the suitcase correctly so it can fit in the overhead compartment of the airplane. The reason why it’s a big issue is that tall peoples clothes have more mass (about 20-25% more) and its harder to pack all the necessary travel items into a normal size carry on suitcase.  Scroll down to see how Ed packs for a 2-3 day trip. Versatility is key. Here is a packing cheat sheet for you on your next business trip. Travel well!

Warm Regards,

Jenni

 THE BASIC ESSENTIALS

If you are going on a 2-3 day trip, you will need the following to fit in your carry-on suitcase:

  • A dark suit (basic color that conceals stains from traveling), black dress shoes, 2 neck ties, and black leather belt
  • 2-3 days-worth of dress socks, underwear and t-shirts (optional)
  • 1 button down white/blue dress shirt
  • 1 set of casual wear: a button down shirt and jeans (something you can grab a meal in). Ed makes sure the shirt can also be used a backup dress shirt if my white/blue dress shirt is ruined
  • Gym outfit: 1 pair of sneakers, t-shirt, a pair of gym socks and shorts
  • Toiletries

IMG_0505

ROLL, STACK, AND FILL

Once you have found the items to pack, now you must insert them thoughtfully into the suitcase. Sneakers need to go in first. Ed’s size 14 shoe takes up about 35-40% of my suitcase right from the start so he has to be strategic on how he packs the rest of his clothes.  Rolling clothes is the best way to reduce wrinkles and reduce space used per item. Start with the pants first, then the shirts and undergarments. Squeeze the socks into the sneakers or into the zipper compartments on the floor of the suitcase.

IMG_0511

PRESS AND CLOSE

You are almost done. Finally press your remaining clothing options (ties, pajamas, extra shirts, etc) and your toiletries onto the top of your rolled clothes. Press down to remove air and zipper the suitcase closed.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Never pack your suit in a carry-on as you will wrinkle and potentially damage it. Since a tall man’s suit is the bulkiest item, it makes sense to wear it while you travel so you can stay light and mobile.

SWEET SUCCESS – LET’S ROLL!

Found: Long Neck Ties

December 5th, 2013

The typical neck tie is not long enough for tall men. Finding long ties is one of the biggest challenges when outfitting tall men for work. The neck tie which evokes sophistication and professionalism falls short of such an image because its length is too short.  A normal tie rests on the middle of the waist line for an average person, but on a tall guy, that normal tie ends up 4 or 5 inches above the waist line. A short tie reinforces the tall awkward  image.

Many Long & Tall men are creative with how to compensate for these tie short comings. They either tie a half Windsor knot instead of a full Windsor knot to add two plus inches of tie length or they tie the knot higher up in order to extend the tie length. The problem with the latter is the back of the tie is too short to be placed in the back loop so it dangles freely and exposes the wearer’s dark secret: he is wearing clothes too small for him.

But there is good news, we have discovered a few long tie brands & retailers (listed below in no specific order) that will solve this problem!  All of these ties go well with a dress shirt and TEAL Premium Chinos.

Warm Regards,

Jenni

 antarctica

These three destinations are not family friendly (unless your kids have already grown up!) and there is a level of high risk. However, for the adventurous adult, the best skiing can be found in Antarctica. Best way to arrive there is to charter a yacht to Antarctica and back for an 11-13 day excursion. Trip will include camping, back country skiing, snowshoeing, kayaking and climbing. Prices range from $4,995 – $27,100. Looks amazing!

Pant-Lightenment: For the Long and Tall, not Big and Tall

November 14th, 2013

IMG_2699

Men over 6’3 in America equate to 5% of the entire population or 7.7 million men. Big and Tall stores primarily focus on the 36 million male obese market and include the tall niche market to increase their overall total available market. The challenge is that the long and tall man cannot find adequate clothes that fit for their body type, because the Big and Tall stores focus on brands for the bigger man not the longer man.

TEAL Apparel is focused exclusively on designing and manufacturing clothes for the Long & Tall man, because it impacts us personally. Ed and his family are all over 6’3 and are long not big. To say that it’s difficult to find clothes to cover let alone fit us is an understatement. And after talking with other families dealing with the same issue, I realized that there is a large niche market that is underserved. I leveraged my past experience in the retail and finance industries to build a brand that provides tall solutions one garment at a time in order to elevate a tall man’s lifestyle and confidence.
