The Teal Chronicles

Our Intern: Sarah Ingram

July 20th, 2016

 Sarah Ingram, Dexter Southfield, Graduate

Sarah on what she learned

Thoughts on being an intern?

Being an intern has the notorious reputation of being the person who is just there to make coffee runs and stay out of the way, but working at TEAL was a completely different experience. I got hands on experience in learning how a small business runs and how the CEO must be able to run all aspects of the company.

What did you expect?

Never being an intern before, I really had no idea what to expect. Due to the short time of the internship, however, I was nervous that I wouldn’t learn anything substantial and would adjust to a new environment just to leave. But I was completely wrong, because I felt at home immediately and found the two weeks extremely productive.

Best part of the internship?

The best part of the internship was being able to experience the marketing side of fashion, something I have never been introduced to before in my life. I also got to watch Jenni pitch her company to a possible buyer, helping me learn how necessary it is to be able to eloquently sell your idea or company.

What surprised you the most?

I was surprised most by how much fun I had doing the photoshoots, but also how much unseen work and effort goes into getting good photos for a website or catalog.

I had the unique pleasure of meeting and working with Sarah this past Spring. She came to us as a Dexter Southfield High School senior and spent 2 weeks doing a little bit of everything: coordinating photoshoots, finding models, photographing and videoing TEAL’s products and capturing her vision for the brand as well as joining a sales pitch to a buyer and preparing materials for fulfillment. Sarah models grace under pressure and contributed commitment, passion and new ideas! Thank you and good luck at George Washington University this Fall.

Lifestyle: www.Tall.Singles

December 4th, 2015

Tiptoe 2

During college, I was a student athlete on the crew team. At 5’9 I was on the short end of the spectrum. Many of my teammates were 5’10 – 6’+.  Finding an appropriately tall person to date was as easy as finding another student athlete.  The tall dating pool was built in.

However, after school, in my 20s I moved to a big city.  I had a few above average height friends (gals 6′ tall) and I noticed that tall mates seemed less available unless you were part of an athletic club (e.g. volleyball club, triathlete circuit) or just got lucky and worked with a tall person or tall people). It was challenging to find tall guys to date and it seemed like the most important criteria (aside from having a job and not being an axe murderer!!) was height. They needed to find someone that was taller than them.

With each generation getting taller finding a tall mate may become more of a challenge. www.tall.singles Founder, Richard Vickery, tells us why and how his tall dating site works. TallSingle.com started in the UK and is now in the US and it boasts 80 marriages. If height is a “must-have” quality for you then read on and find out how www.tall.singles weeds out the shorter mates. Let vertically enhanced love find you.

Love isn’t something you find. Love is something that finds you.

Q

Why a tall specific dating site?

When I got to that age where you start going to nightclubs and bars trying to find girlfriends I would always struggle to meet someone. Not becuase I was ugly (well I hope that wasn’t the reason!) but because I was tall. You see I had a growth spurt in my teenage years and in my late teens I was head and shoulders above everyone my age. So when I walked into a bar I was very often the tallest person of my age in there and the majority of the women my age were much shorter. This continued all the way throught my early 20’s. It made me think that I meeded to find a way to solve this problem. So one evening I searched for free domain names and realised tallsingles.co.uk was free, I bought it immediately and started a tall persons dating site.

Q

Do tall people have more difficulty finding a mate?

A

Well from my experience and the feedback I have had from other people, the answer would be yes! Women seems to want to date men who are taller than them, much of this is due to social pressure (it’s not often you see couples where the man is shorter) and some of it is to do with wanting to feel protected by a taller man. For tall men, it’s again the social pressure but also the fact that a really big height difference can feel awkward. Tall people get enough people stare at them when they walk along on their own, that is multiplied 10 times when they walk hand in hand with a partner who is much shorter.

TallSinglesMainPhoto

Q

Are tall people considered more attractive which is why they can have their own site?

A

No I don’t think so. The idea of the site is to allow tall people to meet other tall people, in order to avoid the “difficult” situations that arise when tall people date much shorter people.

Q

How does your dating site work? Do you set up a profile, wink, go on dates, etc?

A

You can join our site for free initially, so you can see if it is of interest. You set up a profile, which includes a photo, some multiple choice questions which you answer about yourself and a small bio. Once that is done, you can then search for people you might want to date and send them a ‘wink’ (which is an easy way to say you like the look of them) or a message. If you want to arrange a date, you have to upgrade to paid membership.

Q

What is the cost to join your service?

A

Our business model is a subscription service. The costs are as follows, 6 month’s membership £79.95, 3 month’s membership £49.95 and 1 month membership – £24.95. We are up to 72% cheaper than one of the most popular dating sites match.com and of course we only have tall members on our site which is just what tall people want. I am happy to give your readers a 50% discount on a 1 month membership, all they need to do is enter code “50TALL” at checkout.

Q

How do you set yourself apart from your peers?

A

Two things set us apart from our peers. Firstly we are one of the only tall dating sites that restricts members by height, women have to be 5’5’’ and over, men 6’0’’ and over. Secndly we are building a tall community, to discuss tall issues, have a laught about all those things tall people are asked etc.

Q

Why did you start this business? Was it to find a relationship? Can you share other success stories?

A

I started the business in 2012: http://www.tallsingle.com/. As I mentioned above it was to solve a problem that I had encountered when I was younger. I would definitely use it to find a relationship, but when I created the site I was already in a relationship.

We have had over 80 marriages so I can happily share some success stories.  To be continued in a future post.

Tall Hotness Found!

You Are The Bomb

family 6

Our Fall 2015 Campaign features the gorgeous, generous, game for anything Dow Family! We first met Tuffer earlier this year as a customer. Selling to an underserved niche market we generally have two types of customers: excited and passionate (read: super psyched!).

family 8

Tuffer quickly revealed that he was in the latter camp. I recall having an in depth phone conversation with him about tall men’s clothing. We covered everything. One purchase turned into multiple purchases and start of a friendship.

family 4

What really sets Tuffer apart is his personality. He is smart funny and self-deprecating, just like TEAL Apparel! When we approached him about being the face of our next campaign he didn’t bat an eyelash.  He even recruited his wife and daughter.

family 3

Our shoot took place at the Dexter Southfield Boathouse on the Charles River.  The model, family and location were the perfect reflection of the TEAL Apparel Man.

Tuffer and Erin, we are so lucky to be able to shoot you all. Thank you for rolling with the punches, doing the heavy lifting, erging, sculling and being the best model family we could ever ask for! We are deeply grateful to have friends like you.

Our Intern: Gabrielle Bailey

Your thoughts on being an intern…

Being an intern at TEAL was an amazing experience. My last two quarters were hectic, but I loved being able to do some serious work outside of school.

What did you expect…

I did not know what to expect because it was my first internship. I assumed I would be doing some work off to the side and less hands on work as most students predict. I was put to work doing what I loved, what I knew and new things I had no idea I could do.

Best part of the internship…

I learned things about myself and what I can contribute to the business and fashion world. I was able to see factories, learn more about what goes into running a small business, which was perfect for me. Best part was feeling wanted and heard every time I went to work. I did not feel like an intern but someone who was part of something great.

What surprised you the most…

Not being a long & tall man, I was surprised at how needed TEAL is for this niche market!

Press: XLT Clothing Review

February 23rd, 2015

Thank you XLT Clothing! We appreciate the kind review of our chinos on your blog and social media.

Read the full post below:

40″ Inseams?…Thank you, TEAL Apparel!

XLTCLOTHING

Beautiful packaging containing bright color pants with whopping 40” inseams!

This must be heaven.

Not only are they sturdily built but the attention to detail is amazing. The stitching, the backing, the color contrasts and comfort! Oh, the comfort. I had to talk to the creator of these awesome pants.

XLT 1

Fast-Forward

So, it’s 11:00am (CST). Promptly, I receive a phone call from Jenni Lallier – Co-founder and owner of TEAL Apparel.

Of course, during our exchange of pleasantries, Jenni and I briefly discussed the weather. It was currently 28-degrees in Alabama. In Massachusetts, where Jenni and her husband (of 6 feet 7 inches tall) reside, it was clear that it was much colder, comparatively.

XLT2

Though the climate outside was chilly for the both of us, the conversation flowed freely and brought much warmth and laughter like a cup of hot Cocoa.

Jenni is such a pleasant person.

It was a blessing to converse with someone who understood the world that members of the XLT Community live in.

Not only could Jenni relate – she took action.

After learning more about what XLT |Clothing represented, the questions shifted toward understanding more about what TEAL Apparel exemplified – that of which, Jenni was more than happy to discuss.

XLT 2

XLT: Tell us about your company?

Jenni: TEAL Apparel (http://www.tealapparel.com) offers premium clothing for men 6’.

Our goal is to provide exceptional clothing that fits well, feels great, & is accessible within days that’s also affordable. In 2010, TEAL launched with a single chino and currently offers Thirty-Four (34) different products.

The TEAL brand is fun, optimistic and also a self-deprecating – playing up the inherent dark comedy in being tall. I hope that comes across in our website and social media. I think the site is relatable for tall guys and enlightening for the mass market to understand what tall guys endure!

XLT: What differentiates you from Big & Tall or the other Tall products out there?

Jenni: TEAL Apparel is different because we:

  • Are Online, available 365 days, 24/7.
  • Develop clothes that tall men need, which we understand firsthand because we are tall! My husband is 6 feet 7 inches tall with a 38 inch inseam. His clothing needs and tall life style, along with our tall network of friends and customers, drive the ideas behind every item.
  • Design pieces with the tall body frame and height in mind. For example, our slim fit is cut to flatter the leaner Long & Tall guy and also a 40 inch length to cover his socks. Our pocket openings are angled and larger for proportionally larger hands. All designs are created by a Manhattan based designer with years of industry expertise who also designs the Marc by Marc Jacobs men’s line.
  • Make our chinos and shorts from the very best materials in the world. The Italian Cotton Twill is milled in Milan, in one of a kind colors, and our zippers are durable with a fun pop of teal color.
  • Offer our products at an affordable price because we sell directly to the consumer. The cost savings are passed on to our customers who in turn have clothes of higher quality that will endure the test of time.

XLT 3

XLT: How was your company birthed/ what are the products that you sell?

Jenni: I launched TEAL Apparel out of frustration and necessity. There were a series of events that led me to that epiphany. The first was trying to find a nice pair of jeans to give my husband for Christmas. The shopping and online searching became a huge project. I couldn’t find anything except a pair of urban/rapper style jeans that were meant to be worn super slouchy and long, but if my 38’ inseam husband wore them properly they were perfect except for the embarrassingly loud, giant gold lion patches on both back pockets.

The second “aha” moment was during a trip to Las Vegas. My husband and I decided to go shopping at the Forum Shops at Caesars. More than 270 stores should yield something for a Long & Tall guy, right? Wrong. There was not one thing we could find that would fit except for a custom shirt that cost 2x retail and would be ready in 4-6 weeks. That night the idea of TEAL Apparel was conceived. My intent was to provide Long & Tall guys with affordable clothes, designed for the tall body type that’s available in days.

We provide premium chinos and shorts. We have 2 collections: Italian and the All-American in 11 colors and 2 different fits. We also offer e-gift certificates; the one size fits every Long & Tall man.

XLT: How tall are you? How tall is your husband?

Jenni: I know what some of you may be thinking…what does a 5’9 Asian woman from Hawaii know about Long & Tall guys? To that I say A LOT! During the 13 years that I have been with my husband tall chokepoints have been at every turn. Whether it was testing car after car to be sure the seats moved back to provide enough leg room, to the trunk door that open right to temple hitting level, or the bed that wasn’t long enough for his feet. I’ve also learned and am still learning (from our customers and tall friends) new tall shopping tricks or that tidying up after my husband things means feeling around at the top of all of our shelves. And now that I’ve launched TEAL I am evolving into a height expert, leading the tall charge!

My husband is 6’7, 38” inseam and wears the TEAL Traditional Fit.

XLT: What are your current goals and future goals?

Jenni: They’re pretty much the same. I want to develop and source products that tall guys need. Right now we’re working on long sleeve button downs for work, golf shirts for weekend, jeans and undershirts.

I also want to continue to spread the word about TEAL Apparel. We are working on several PR initiatives, sales events and developing a TEAL Advocate program. TEAL Advocates are customers and tall friends who are helping us spread the word about TEAL while accumulating credit towards TEAL clothing.

XLT: How did you come in contact with XLT Clothing?

Jenni: We connected on Instagram! XLT Clothing found us and liked our Fall 2014 shoot.

XLT: Where are you located?

Jenni: TEAL Apparel is 100% bootstrapped and funded by my husband and me. We believe passionately about making premium clothes available for men 6’ and taller. We understand the underserved market because we are it. TEAL’s operations and fulfillment are run out of the spare bedroom in our home in Newton, Massachusetts.

XLT: Do you have a slogan/motto?

Jenni: We do! It’s Live Tall. And Extra Long.

XLT: What’s your website address, FB, Twitter, IG and any other points of contact?

Jenni: Shop and learn more about TEAL at: http://tealapparel.com.

Email me directly! I’d love to connect with more wives who shop for their husbands and family, send your questions, feedback about the product or to tell me what we should produce next. I want to hear from you! jenni@tealapparel.com

Press: Europe’s Tallest Tourist Attraction Mesmerizes

January 23rd, 2014

glass cube 1

Adventure helps to expand our minds and teaches us knowledge that books cannot explain. Always seeking the next greatest adventure, I came upon an attraction in the French alps that suspends a glass cube over the zenith of 3,842 meter high Aiguille du Midi mountain. It certainly tests your nerve. If you fear falling, this may not be the best place for you to go, but if you are courageous enough to stomach an awe-inspiring vision, you must make a trip to the “Pans dans le vide” or Step into the Void.

glass cube 2

The view, 1000 meters down, includes the entire French Alps in addition to Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest mountain. The glass cube structure is made up of 5 transparent sides. Each side is fabricated out of 3 layers of tempered glass fixed to metal for added support.  Just opened to the public after 3 years of construction, one can take a cable car ride up to the lookout for incomparable vistas and refreshments. The cost:

Adults (16+ and older)                                $75.00 USD
Youth (4 -16 years)                                       $64.10 USD
Under 4 years                                               $37.67 USD
Family Packages (2 adults/2 kids)             $226.00 USD

The attraction is a very popular destination already. If you are in  the Chamonix area in France, it is worth a trip to Aiguillle du Midi mountaintop.

Press: Emirates Airline has the world’s longest superjumbo flight

January 16th, 2014

Hi Everyone,

I love adventures to new and interesting places and Dubai has always been on my bucket list of must see destinations. I recently read that Emirates Airlines now has the world’s longest flight at 16 hours straight from Dubai to Los Angeles, crossing 2 continents and 1 ocean. Emirates Airline is well known for its luxury and world class service which is a must have if you are going to be distracted for 16 hours long. For my husband, the Long & Tall guy, he needs legroom and Emirates seats extend to 79 inches or 6 feet 5 inches long. This is incredible for an airline. Interestingly enough Emirates has routes all over the world but they all go to Dubai so they definitely control the experience which is arguably the best on earth. If you are interested to learn more about this airline and what they are doing to make long trips pleasant, click on this web link.

World’s longest superjumbo flight starts 16-hour hauls

December 5, 2013 – The Sydney Morning Herald

By Craig Platt, Travel Editor Digital

Emirates has launched the world’s longest A380 superjumbo flight, from Dubai to Los Angeles, on a route that crosses Russia, the Arctic and northern Canada.

The journey of 16 hours and 20 minutes covers 13,420 kilometres. The first flight touched down on Tuesday in Los Angeles. Previously Emirates had flown the long-range Boeing 777-200LR jet, which it began flying to Los Angeles in 2008. The airline said the introduction of the 489-seat Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger jet, was a response to increased demand for travel between the two cities.

The time difference means  the daily flights will depart Dubai at 8.20am and arrive in Los Angeles at 12.50pm on the same day. Conversely, the return flight departs LA at 4pm and arrives at 7.50pm the next day.

Although Airbus has suffered this year from slow sales of its flagship aircraft, Emirates recently said it viewed the superjumbo as the future of air travel and ordered 50 more of the jets on top of its existing order of 90 – 41 of which have been delivered.

“For us the A380 is the future. And we don’t like anyone talking about it not being around,” president Tim Clark said.

Clark recently indicated that the airline was looking at the possibility of increasing the number of economy class seats by up to 40.

Like Singapore Airlines, Emirates has used the enormous size of the A380 to deliver unique features for passengers, especially at the pointy end. The airline’s first-class cabin has bathrooms with showers – a world first when introduced in 2008.

While Emirates now lays claim to the world’s longest A380 non-stop flight, the title for the longest non-stop flight by distance, is held by Qantas. The longest flight time is Delta Air Lines’ Johannesburg to Atlanta flights which take 17 hours. The Emirates flight is the world’s third longest by distance.

Qantas flights from Sydney to Dallas, with a Boeing 747 jumbo jet, cover a whopping 13,800 kilometres and take a little more than 15 hours.

Qantas took the title last month after Singapore Airlines ended its non-stop flights from Singapore to New York, a 19-hour slog that covered 16,700 kilometres on a four-engine Airbus A340-500. The flights, which were business class only, had struggled to maintain profitability because of rising oil prices.
