Health: Sotos Syndrome

January 27th, 2017

Tall Teen Picture 2

Broc D. Brown is not your average 19-year-old. He is actually the world’s tallest teen at a whopping 7ft, 8ins and is still growing. He grows at an astonishing rate of 6 inches per year. If Broc continues to grow at this rate, he’ll be on track to become the world’s tallest man. It is said that Broc was about 5’2” in kindergarten, 6ft by middle school, and 7ft tall by high school.

Tall Teen Picture 4

Broc suffers from Sotos Syndrome, also known as cerebral gigantism, which is a genetic disorder that causes excessive growth. Along with this disorder, Broc also suffers from learning disabilities, strain on the heart, curvature of the spine, and narrowing of the spinal cord. But Broc doesn’t let anything get in his way.

Tall Teen Picture

When you’re that tall, it’s hard to find clothes to fit just right, so Broc has to get all his clothes specially made for him. He has to get shoes and socks made for him because you can’t find size 28 sneakers in any store. He has a special 8ft bed so his feet don’t hang off. His community has come together and raised $10,000 for Broc and his family so that they can afford clothing for Broc.

Broc, you definitely Live Tall and Extra Long. You are not alone, we’re reassured to know that your community is rallying around you! We are also inspired by your ability to stay positive despite your many challenges. Make the most of your height and go for it!

Adventures: Six Tips for Traveling Tall

January 26th, 2017

 Tall airline 2

We’re  sure everyone has been on a flight where their legs just get cramped up, now imagine that feeling being 6’ or taller. Tall men and women are never remotely comfortable on flights.

The standard for legroom in the United States is a total of 31 inches and is commonly used by most airlines. When taking into consideration a person of a taller height, 31 inches is barely enough room for the tall flier and an awkward space to comfortably fit longer legs. One can obviously have a better experience by upgrading your seat for extra money, but airlines should do more to accommodate passengers of all sizes.

1. To enhance your flying experience pick a carrier with more leg space.

Top three United States airlines with the most leg room:

  • JetBlue: 33 to 34 inches
  • Virgin America: 32 inches
  • Southwest: 32 to 33 inches

Airlines only have a weight standard, claiming that the average passenger weighs about 190 pounds, but there is no average for height. So here are five helpful tips for tall people on how to get a little more comfort on your next flight.

2. Book Your Flight in Advance

By booking in advance, it gives you more seating choices. You’ll have a better chance of getting an “extra leg room” seat, though you might have to pay a little extra. If you can’t pick your seat, try flying at “non-peak hours”. This way, you have a better chance of having an emptier flight, which means you might get a few open seats next to you to stretch out.

3. Arrive Early To The Gate

By arriving early, you can ask the person who is checking you in if there are any emergency exit seats available. Emergency exit rows have more room in case of an emergency. If your height doesn’t tip them off, be polite and express how much discomfort you’ll be in, generally the person checking you in will take pitty on you and help out or even upgrade you to an emergency exit seat with no extra charge. If you cannot get an emergency exit seat, go for the row behind the emergency exit row. This is because the emergency exit seats do not recline.

4. Get As Much Room As You Can

Don’t travel with anything under the seat in front of you. This will give you more room to stretch your legs under the seat. Also, try removing the magazines in the seat pocket. Though there is very limited leg room, getting every available centimeter of room will count.

5. Get Up And Stretch

Stretching can really benefit you, especially on long flights. When the seatbelt light is off, feel free to walk up and down the aisles. Or even on some Jet Blue flights, you can congregate in the back of the plane right in front of the flight attendant’s section.

6. Distractions

If all else fails, just sit back, relax as much as you can, and enjoy your flight. Pick a movie to watch, or get a good book before you take off. Try and get you mind off the discomfort as much as you can.

Health: Eat Up

January 25th, 2017

Robert 1

Are you consuming enough?

We recently read about a 7’7, 16 year old basketball player whose goal is to eat 4,000 calories a day.  While the average person is trying to maintain or even lower their daily intake of 2,500 calories, 4,000 calories seems like a ludicrous quantity. But, based on calorie counters this is actually a good daily goal to maintain weight for someone 7’7.  One of the lesser known challenges of being tall is adequate nutrition and hydration.

In order to ensure you’re eating and hydrating enough use an online calculator. We used this Calorie Counter Calculator to validate the 4,000 calorie per day diet that Robert sticks to:

http://www.calculator.net/calorie-calculator.html

We also went a step further to look at hydration. The typical recommendation of 8 cups of water per day does not work for someone 7’7.  Based on height, weight, activity level and climate, Robert  should drink 19 cups of water per day.

http://www.h4hinitiative.com/tools/hydration-calculator

The standard quantities and recommendations do not apply to tall people. Figure out what you need to eat and drink so that you can really Live Tall!

Robert 2

At just Sixteen years old, Robert Bobroczky is taller than any current basketball player in the NBA right now. Robert is originally from Romania but has moved to the United States to pursue his dream in basketball. He is currently a freshman on the varsity team at Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio and recently had his first debut on the court. Robert is at a current height of 7-foot-7 and is expected to grow even taller!

Off the court, Robert is a dedicated student and is fluent in four different languages. (English, Hungarian, Romanian, and Italian) He carries an impressive 4.0 grade point average and enjoys playing the piano in his free time.

Robert is still developing and is putting focus on making his body stronger and better. He is bulking up and hopes to gain at least 30 pounds by the end of the season. Bobroczky has great potential and continues to work on improving his game every day. There are no guarantees but if he continues to grow and improve his skills, he may be able to fulfil his dream of playing in the NBA one day!

unibrow blog

How did we get here?

Backstory: Wife buys you pants that have the perfect length, but a giant waist.  Ever had an excessively loose pair of pants that needed to be taken in so much that the back welts touched?  Then you know what unibrows are. They are pants and shorts that don’t quite fit right – in fact they’re downright huge and need to be tailored. If it wasn’t for a trusty belt these pants would be cleaning the floor around your ankles.

Tall guys – you all have these pants in your rotation. They are the ones you wear when everything else is dirty. The last resort. The lowest moment in your week, when you wished you had remembered to do laundry so that you wouldn’t have to pay the price.

The unibrow pant problem always reminds me of my husband’s dragon pants. One year I was determined to find my husband a pair of upscale, dark wash jeans. I literally searched the entire city of San Francisco and I couldn’t find a 38×38 jean anywhere. I finally found ONE pair of urban, rapper style jeans at Bloomingdales. They were supposed to be worn super slouchy, off the hips and baggy. Not intended to be worn at the waist with the hem hitting right below the ankle like a regular pair of jeans. No matter, I was determined to make it work.

From the front these jeans were awesome. The leg fit well enough and it was a nice dark wash. The back was a totally different story. Each back pocket had a giant, gold, embroidered crown bearing dragon. Subtle, not so much. Especially since my 6’7 husband’s backside is at everyone else’s eye level! At parties he would wear his “nice” jeans and become the butt of the joke. Literally. Hey man, what’s up with the gold dragons? After one year’s Christmas Party he never wore them again. Moral of the story: Tall guys can’t hide their assets.

That’s why I launched TEAL Apparel – to stop Unibrows, dragon patches and the walk of shame. I want tall guys to have access to incredible fitting chinos and shorts so that they can do the walk of fame!

Press: Europe’s Tallest Tourist Attraction Mesmerizes

January 23rd, 2014

glass cube 1

Adventure helps to expand our minds and teaches us knowledge that books cannot explain. Always seeking the next greatest adventure, I came upon an attraction in the French alps that suspends a glass cube over the zenith of 3,842 meter high Aiguille du Midi mountain. It certainly tests your nerve. If you fear falling, this may not be the best place for you to go, but if you are courageous enough to stomach an awe-inspiring vision, you must make a trip to the “Pans dans le vide” or Step into the Void.

glass cube 2

The view, 1000 meters down, includes the entire French Alps in addition to Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest mountain. The glass cube structure is made up of 5 transparent sides. Each side is fabricated out of 3 layers of tempered glass fixed to metal for added support.  Just opened to the public after 3 years of construction, one can take a cable car ride up to the lookout for incomparable vistas and refreshments. The cost:

Adults (16+ and older)                                $75.00 USD
Youth (4 -16 years)                                       $64.10 USD
Under 4 years                                               $37.67 USD
Family Packages (2 adults/2 kids)             $226.00 USD

The attraction is a very popular destination already. If you are in  the Chamonix area in France, it is worth a trip to Aiguillle du Midi mountaintop.

Press: Emirates Airline has the world’s longest superjumbo flight

January 16th, 2014

Hi Everyone,

I love adventures to new and interesting places and Dubai has always been on my bucket list of must see destinations. I recently read that Emirates Airlines now has the world’s longest flight at 16 hours straight from Dubai to Los Angeles, crossing 2 continents and 1 ocean. Emirates Airline is well known for its luxury and world class service which is a must have if you are going to be distracted for 16 hours long. For my husband, the Long & Tall guy, he needs legroom and Emirates seats extend to 79 inches or 6 feet 5 inches long. This is incredible for an airline. Interestingly enough Emirates has routes all over the world but they all go to Dubai so they definitely control the experience which is arguably the best on earth. If you are interested to learn more about this airline and what they are doing to make long trips pleasant, click on this web link.

World’s longest superjumbo flight starts 16-hour hauls

December 5, 2013 – The Sydney Morning Herald

By Craig Platt, Travel Editor Digital

Emirates has launched the world’s longest A380 superjumbo flight, from Dubai to Los Angeles, on a route that crosses Russia, the Arctic and northern Canada.

The journey of 16 hours and 20 minutes covers 13,420 kilometres. The first flight touched down on Tuesday in Los Angeles. Previously Emirates had flown the long-range Boeing 777-200LR jet, which it began flying to Los Angeles in 2008. The airline said the introduction of the 489-seat Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger jet, was a response to increased demand for travel between the two cities.

The time difference means  the daily flights will depart Dubai at 8.20am and arrive in Los Angeles at 12.50pm on the same day. Conversely, the return flight departs LA at 4pm and arrives at 7.50pm the next day.

Although Airbus has suffered this year from slow sales of its flagship aircraft, Emirates recently said it viewed the superjumbo as the future of air travel and ordered 50 more of the jets on top of its existing order of 90 – 41 of which have been delivered.

“For us the A380 is the future. And we don’t like anyone talking about it not being around,” president Tim Clark said.

Clark recently indicated that the airline was looking at the possibility of increasing the number of economy class seats by up to 40.

Like Singapore Airlines, Emirates has used the enormous size of the A380 to deliver unique features for passengers, especially at the pointy end. The airline’s first-class cabin has bathrooms with showers – a world first when introduced in 2008.

While Emirates now lays claim to the world’s longest A380 non-stop flight, the title for the longest non-stop flight by distance, is held by Qantas. The longest flight time is Delta Air Lines’ Johannesburg to Atlanta flights which take 17 hours. The Emirates flight is the world’s third longest by distance.

Qantas flights from Sydney to Dallas, with a Boeing 747 jumbo jet, cover a whopping 13,800 kilometres and take a little more than 15 hours.

Qantas took the title last month after Singapore Airlines ended its non-stop flights from Singapore to New York, a 19-hour slog that covered 16,700 kilometres on a four-engine Airbus A340-500. The flights, which were business class only, had struggled to maintain profitability because of rising oil prices.

Press: TEAL Apparel Year End Review

January 9th, 2014

aboutusphoto RESIZED

Happy 2014 Everyone,

2013 was a tremendous year for TEAL Apparel. Much has transpired since the Launch in April and I want to thank everyone for their support and feedback. I launched TEAL to solve the many clothing challenges Long & Tall men and their loved ones encounter each day while providing a premium clothing option designed to fit and feel amazing. So I wanted to share with you what was accomplished last year, what I learned and give some insight as to where TEAL is going in 2014. I am here to serve you so your feedback is encouraged, I’d love to hear from YOU! This is a small family business with Long & Tall dreams. Nothing great ever came easy, yet a step forward is a step in the right direction. All best wishes in 2014 and come back soon.

Warm Regards,

Jenni

What I did:

  • Launch TEAL Apparel with 2 styles of premium chinos (slim and traditional fit)
  • Moved to new location in Massachusetts to be closer to Boston
  • Added inventory for greater selection
  • Revised our story so you understand what TEAL stands
  • Tailored the blog to discuss lifestyle trends in the Long & Tall space
  • Included Free Shipping and Free Returns on all orders, because no one wants a hassle
  • Defined the target market in bold black on the top of our website, because many customers questioned if they were TALL enough
  • Increased our operations and design team to 6 people to improve quality, production and efficiency

 What I learned:

  • There are over 7.7 million men over 6’3 in the US and there is no premium clothing option designed to fit them.
  • 70% of all menswear shopping is done by women and done online
  • Resourcefulness and persistence pay dividends later
  • Never stop learning and improving
  • Trust is earned
  • Make friends
  • Success is made one customer at a time
  • Don’t fear failure, but work your tail off to win
  • Technology can be a helpful agent if you can understand and use it well
  • A great product cannot be made without a great team and the patience to develop it

 What is next?

  • Colors! More colors are on the way for the traditional and slim fits. Finally you can add some variety to your wardrobe
  • Shorts that have added length, because short shorts are embarrassing
  • Video – a better medium to tell our story

TEAL Apparel provides premium long pants designed for the Long & Tall man, made of quality materials, sewn in the USA and sold on-line.

Health: Long & Tall Men Are Not Obese, Here’s Proof

January 2nd, 2014

Recently my husband, Ed, went to his pediatrician for his annual checkup and was directed to the Body Mass Index (BMI) chart on the door to explain if his tall size was obese. The chart only went to 6’4, yet Ed is 6’7.  So the doctor made an educated guess that he was not obese given his weight of 218 lbs. and height.

BMI Chart 1 – For Men Under 6’4

BMI chart for men under 6'3

Source: http://www.calculatebmi.co/bmi-calculator-for-men/

We found it disturbing that the chart did not include men taller than 6’3 so I created our own BMI chart specifically for men over 6 feet tall.

BMI Chart 2 – For Men over 6′

BMI chart for men over 6 foot

The BMI charts are extremely informative about the range of people’s health given their height and weight.

Interesting Stats
The BMI index formula is kg/m² or your weight in kilograms divided by your height squared in meters.

Average Weight for men in the US over 20 years old by percentile (according to CDC.gov)

50% 189 lbs

75% 218 lbs

85% 236 lbs

90% 252 lbs

95% 273 lbs

Average Height for men in the US over 20 years old by percentile (according to CDC.gov)

50% 69 in or 5 ft 9 in

75% 71 in or 5 ft 11 in

85% 72 in or 6 ft

90% 73 in or 6 ft 1 in

95% 74 in or 6 ft 2 in

35% of the US population is obese (according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

The results of the research were quite interesting. I found that the taller you are, the less likely you are to become obese as you have more mass to distribute throughout your body. The BMI charts clearly show that men under 6’3 are more likely to be considered obese versus those taller than 6’3. So if you are tall and considered big, you are not necessarily obese. The good news is that we sell clothes for the Long & Tall man who is not obese so rest assured that TEAL will have something great waiting for you when you need it.  Have a happy and healthy New Year everyone!

Warm Regards,

Jenni
