Our Interns: Lauren and Naomi

October 1st, 2017

interns 5

Naomi Ricciotti, Newbury College, Graduate

Naomi on what she learned

Thoughts on being an intern?

Being an intern at TEAL Apparel was an awesome experience. Jenni is a great mentor and I learned so much throughout the duration of the internship. I enjoyed going to work because it was such a positive atmosphere and there was never a dull moment. The internship was very hands on and I learned something new every day!

What did you expect?

When I walked through the door on my first day of the internship I had already known that I was going to have a great experience. Jenni spoke about her goals and the company with so much passion which got me really excited before even starting my internship. I didn’t expect that we would get to visit the factory which was one of my favorite experiences

Best part of the internship?

The best part of the internship was the fact that I got to see and be involved in so many different aspects of the business. Every time I came in to work I had a different task to achieve which not only challenged me but allowed me to learn something new. For example, one day I would be conducting research for product development versus another day where I would be creating social media posts.

What surprised you the most?

What surprised me the most was how involved Jenni gets with her interns. I loved the working environment because it was more face to face which allowed us to work together as a team. Whether I had a question or an idea about something she was there to listen and give input. She was with me every step of the way and we made a great team!

This past Winter/Spring TEAL had a new first. Instead of one intern we lucked out with two. This dynamic duo came to us from Newbury College, with Fashion Merchandising majors and several shared experiences including, study abroad in Florence, Italty to directing and coordinating the College’s fashion show. To say we hit the jackpot was an understatement. They cranked out blog posts, did research on several new products, sat in on sample fittings, shot tons of material for social media, coordinated a photoshoot, joined a sales pitch to a new client and journeyed to our factory in Everett.  Lauren and Naomi model teamwork, commitment, creativity and determination. Thank you and congratulations on your graduation from Newbury College! Wishing you both much learning and success.

Our Interns: Lauren and Naomi

Lauren Shropshire, Newbury College, Graduate

Lauren (left) on what she learned

Thoughts on being an intern?

I really enjoyed being an intern at TEAL Apparel. I not only had fun, but I feel that I learned a lot about how a business runs. I really loved being up close with the products, and being able to see all the different facets of how the product goes from being an idea to becoming a reality. I liked that TEAL was a small company, because I feel that if I had interned at a large corporation, I wouldn’t have learned as much.

What did you expect?

I don’t really know what I expected to be honest. I guess when I think of an intern and an internship, I think of someone who is fetching coffees for the big boss. But that is not what TEAL was like at all. I didn’t think as an intern that Jenni would ask for my opinion or my input on products as much as she did. I also didn’t think the internship would be as hands on as it was.

Best part of the internship?

There were a lot of best parts of this internship for me. One of the parts that I really enjoyed was going to the factory. I loved seeing where and how the clothing was made. I also really liked sitting in on meetings with Jenni. I thought it was very interesting to see how meetings like this work. I think I learned a lot from watching Jenni in these meetings, and hearing and seeing the types of questions she asks, and how she answers the questions that are posed to her.

What surprised you the most?

Hmmm…The thing that surprised me the most is how cool Jenni is and how passionate she is about TEAL Apparel. Like I said, I didn’t really know what to expect with this Internship, but Jenni exceeded anything that I could have imagined. She was just so helpful, I feel that I’ve learned a lot with just talking to Jenni and getting advice on my future. Jenni is very insightful, super encouraging and supportive. I really enjoyed this internship, and all the information and skills that I have gained from this.

Tall Living: Bedroom

Tall Living Bed

Do your feet hang out from under your comforter or hang off the bed?

Feeling comfortable in bed is one of the biggest challenges for tall people. Either you’re stuck lying diagonal in bed or curled up in a ball. One way you can combat this problem is to buy a larger bed. An average king sized bed is 80 inches, or 6ft 6in, but some feet are still dangling off the edge. A California King mattress gives you an extra 4 inches in length as well as width. Or you can get a custom-made mattress, or even mattress extenders.

Lifestyle: The Heights The NFL Goes To

February 2nd, 2017

patriots blog

With Super Bowl Championship Number 51 right around the corner the New England Patriots football legacy has never been brighter. Patriots Nation is gearing up for the ultimate season end.  As a Massachusetts based company, naturally TEAL Apparel is cheering the Patriots to a win.

Tall athletes are usually associated with basketball, rowing and volleyball.  But, we thought it would be interesting to look into tall people of the NFL (National Football League). The average height range for an NFL player is between 5’11” and 6’6”.   We were surprised to find that last year the Patriots had the lowest average height in the entire league, roughly 6’1. The tallest player on the team, Sebastian Vollmer, is a towering 6’8. Clearly height isn’t a determining factor in football greatness.

Here is a list of the tallest men who played in the NFL:

Richard Sligh

Richard Sligh, 7’0”, is the tallest NFL football player. He played defensive tackle for the Oakland Raiders back in 1967. He is the tallest pro football player in history.

NFL richard

Terell Brown

Terell Brown, at 6’10”, plays for the St. Louis Rams offensive tackle. He is tied for height with Kansas City Chiefs, Morris Stroud.

NFL Terell

Morris Stroud

Morris Stroud, also 6’10”, played for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1970’s. He was a Tight End for the Chiefs, and was considered the tallest pro NFL player at that time.

NFL Morris

 Ed “Too Tall” Jones

Ed “Too Tall” Jones, 6’9”, has it right in his name, too tall. He played for 15 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.

NFL Ed

King Dunlap

King Dunlap who is also 6’9” plays offensive tackle for the San Diego Chargers.

NFL King

Good luck to both the Patriots and the Falcons. We will be watching!

Adventures: Six Tips for Traveling Tall

January 26th, 2017

 Tall airline 2

We’re  sure everyone has been on a flight where their legs just get cramped up, now imagine that feeling being 6’ or taller. Tall men and women are never remotely comfortable on flights.

The standard for legroom in the United States is a total of 31 inches and is commonly used by most airlines. When taking into consideration a person of a taller height, 31 inches is barely enough room for the tall flier and an awkward space to comfortably fit longer legs. One can obviously have a better experience by upgrading your seat for extra money, but airlines should do more to accommodate passengers of all sizes.

1. To enhance your flying experience pick a carrier with more leg space.

Top three United States airlines with the most leg room:

  • JetBlue: 33 to 34 inches
  • Virgin America: 32 inches
  • Southwest: 32 to 33 inches

Airlines only have a weight standard, claiming that the average passenger weighs about 190 pounds, but there is no average for height. So here are five helpful tips for tall people on how to get a little more comfort on your next flight.

2. Book Your Flight in Advance

By booking in advance, it gives you more seating choices. You’ll have a better chance of getting an “extra leg room” seat, though you might have to pay a little extra. If you can’t pick your seat, try flying at “non-peak hours”. This way, you have a better chance of having an emptier flight, which means you might get a few open seats next to you to stretch out.

3. Arrive Early To The Gate

By arriving early, you can ask the person who is checking you in if there are any emergency exit seats available. Emergency exit rows have more room in case of an emergency. If your height doesn’t tip them off, be polite and express how much discomfort you’ll be in, generally the person checking you in will take pitty on you and help out or even upgrade you to an emergency exit seat with no extra charge. If you cannot get an emergency exit seat, go for the row behind the emergency exit row. This is because the emergency exit seats do not recline.

4. Get As Much Room As You Can

Don’t travel with anything under the seat in front of you. This will give you more room to stretch your legs under the seat. Also, try removing the magazines in the seat pocket. Though there is very limited leg room, getting every available centimeter of room will count.

5. Get Up And Stretch

Stretching can really benefit you, especially on long flights. When the seatbelt light is off, feel free to walk up and down the aisles. Or even on some Jet Blue flights, you can congregate in the back of the plane right in front of the flight attendant’s section.

6. Distractions

If all else fails, just sit back, relax as much as you can, and enjoy your flight. Pick a movie to watch, or get a good book before you take off. Try and get you mind off the discomfort as much as you can.
